In 2023, SWE won 1st place in the inaugural United Arab Emirates Future Mobility Challenge and Electric Vehicle Grand Prix. They completed 69 laps (about 28 km or 17 miles) in one hour and 29 seconds. SWE persevered despite the fact that the car (nicknamed “Joan Jett'' after a famous alumna) was almost stuck at the airport in New York, arrived late from a connection in Dubai, and hiccups which prevented the car from being fully operational until 10 minutes before race time!
Second place went to SABIS International School – Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, completed the course in one hour and 32 seconds., and third place was awarded to Savoia Corse, from Italy.
ADU hosted the EVGP, where high school students design, build, test and race single person electric cars. Participants in this event included 15 high school teams from the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Egypt, Qatar and the USA. During the competition, the teams showcased their unique designs and projects to the jury members. These teams also displayed their commitment to the required criteria of innovation, sustainability and the design's impact on the environment.
ADU’s College of Engineering, in partnership with Global EEE, 3elm Education and Training Consultancy, and the U.S. Mission to the UAE, co-hosted the event. Support for this event also came from MathWorks®, ProjoTech, Al Nabooda Automobiles and Electric Vehicle Innovation Summit (EVIS). Thanks to SWE graduates and parents for helping SWE participate and win!
